The dates of Sambok (ไธ‰ไผ), the three hottest periods of summer, are determined by the lunar calendar, so they vary slightly each year. This year, Chobok (ๅˆไผ โ€“ the beginning of the heat) and Jungbok (ไธญไผ โ€“ the peak of the heat) fall relatively close to each other. Sambok is considered a seasonal period (์žก์ ˆ, ้›œ็ฏ€) that occurs between mid-July and mid-August in the solar calendar. These days are also called Boknal (ไผๆ—ฅ) or Samgyeongil (ไธ‰ๅบšๆ—ฅ).

  • Chobok (ๅˆไผ): The third Gyeongil (ๅบšๆ—ฅ, the day with the heavenly stem “Gyeong”) after the summer solstice โ€“ the start of the heat.
  • Jungbok (ไธญไผ): The fourth Gyeongil โ€“ the peak of the heat.
  • Malbok (ๆœซไผ): The first Gyeongil after the start of autumn (Ipchu) or thereafter โ€“ the tail end of the heat.

Each Boknal is determined by the ten-day cycle of the heavenly stems (์‹ญ๊ฐ„), so the dates are spaced 10 days apart. However, while Chobok and Jungbok are always 10 days apart, Jungbok and Malbok can be either 10 or 20 days apart. This is because Malbok does not fall on the fifth Gyeongil after the solstice but on the first Gyeongil after Ipchu or later.

Since the period between the summer solstice and Ipchu is about 47 days, sometimes there are five Gyeongil days in between, making Jungbok and Malbok 20 days apart.

  • If Jungbok and Malbok are 10 days apart, it is called Maebok (ๆฏไผ).
  • If they are 20 days apart, it is called Wolbok (่ถŠไผ).

Because 47 days is closer to 50 than 40, Wolbok occurs more frequently than Maebok, with a ratio of roughly 7:3. Wolbok years and Maebok years alternate for about 10 years, and for another 10 years, Wolbok appears continuously.
